Bike Tour: Central Drenthe Star Tour N-S - 6 days

Living in the most densely populated country in Europe, the Dutch love to get away from the hustle and bustle whenever they can. Quiet Drenthe Province is a favourite retreat! Its focus on tourism, excellent network of bike tracks, open spaces, rural charisma and diverse scenery all contribute to making our cyclists feel relaxed and welcome. Babbling brooks and shining ponds adorn the flat landscape consisting of a patchwork of woodland, heathland (lovely in August!), open areas of boggy peatland or lowland bog and farmland. A large part of the route has been laid out through nature reserves. Points of interest on the route include ancient megalithic burial chambers; picturesque country villages such as Orvelte museum village; and WWII Camp Westerbork Museum and Memorial Centre.

Day 1:    Arrival in Westerbork

In the charming village of Westerbork we have booked you a room at Ruyghe Venne. This is where you will stay for four nights in a row, enjoying the comfort and luxury that this stylish hotel emanates.
Today you will have time to explore the village of Westerbork at your leasure. There is always something going on in this friendly place. Sauntering through the authentic village centre, soak up the Olde Drenthe atmosphere.

Day 2:    Heading North
42 km
If youre into WWII, Camp Westerbork Memorial Centre will no doubt be your first stop. From 1942 to 1944, Camp Westerbork was used by the Nazis as a transit camp to deport thousands of Jews (and others) to concentration camps elsewhere in Europe. The impressive museum gives visitors realistic insight into the lives of victims and survivors. There is original film footage from 1944. On a lighter note, if you have an interest in astronomy, you might like to visit the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescopes, consisting of a linear array of 14 antennas arranged on a 2.7 km East-West line. To reach them, you walk through the woods down Milky Way path, displaying informative down-scale models of the planets of the solar system. This place inspired Dutch author Harry Mulisch when he was writing his famous book The Discovery of Heaven (1992). Recommended reading! Enjoying the wonderful natural scenery, you continue your bike tour to Grolloo nature reserve. In woods alternating with open heath, ponds reflect the clouds. The silence is broken only by the call of a bird, the drumming of a woodpecker, or the sound of one of the many other species of animals living in this habitat. Get your cameras out in beautiful Grolloerveen. Cross this impressive boggy peatland on a long boardwalk, said to be the longest wooden cycling bridge in the Netherlands.
Day 3:    Heading East
36 km
Todays route is full of surprises. First up are the vast woods at Elper Noorderveld. The light green deciduous trees contrast nicely with the dark pines. Near the village of Schoonloo, the woods are interspersed with picturesque open areas. If you are into wild swimming, you may like to go for a natural dip in the cool waters of the swimming lake! After a wonderful days cycling return to Golden Tulip Hotel, have a well earned rest, and go over the days events in your mind.
Day 4:    Heading South
43 km
Travel back in time to the museum village of Orvelte. Monumental farmhouses with thatched roofs, demonstrations of old trades and crafts, narrow cobbled streets, all give you a sense of how Drenthe must have looked around the year 1900. After Orvelte, pedal on to Zweeloo, a picturesque village where many Saxon farmhouses can still be admired. This village inspired a number of painters, including Van Gogh! Nearby, you will find the remains of large prehistoric stone burial chambers known as "hunebedden.. In Gees nature reserve, you will love the vast mauve-coloured heather fields, subject of many of the picture postcards of Drenthe Province. However, please remain vigilant at all times. For this is the territory of Ellert and Brammert! Legend has it, these two giant highwaymen rob travellers on the public road! At the end of the day, put your feet up in the trusted and familiar environment of Golden Tulip Hotel Midden-Drenthe.
Day 5:    Heading West
44 km
One never tires of the scenery in Drenthe. You will start today with a wonderful route to the laidback village of Beilen where you might like to pause for refreshment. Typical cookies for Drenthe are sweet crisp waffles known as knieperties. Enchanting Dwingeloo nature reserve is a patchwork of woods, heather fields, drift-sand areas (a bit like a tiny desert!) and many small lakes. After passing through the village of Spier you will return to Beilen. From here, you will take a different route, through Holtherzand, a beautiful area of woodland and heath, back to your hotel in Westerbork.
Day 6:    Return Home

Today your cycling holiday draws to a close. But not until you have treated yourself to a big Dutch breakfast one last time. After breakfast, it is time to go home.
