Hoge Veluwe National Park Tour

Bike Tour: Hoge Veluwe National Park Tour - 5 days

This attractive cycle route runs criss-cross through areas of great natural beauty: Hoge Veluwe National Park and Veluwezoom National Park. It guides you through fragrant pinewoods, beautiful deciduous forests (beeches, birches etc), Europe’s largest sand drifts and heath land which lights up a vivid purple in August. A flock of sheep may cross your path but if you get up really early you may get lucky and see deer, a fox, badger, mouflon or wild boar. What’s more, you can choose to stop off at Zutphen and Arnhem, all historical towns with their own unique charm. A number of tourist attractions on this bike tour may also catch your interest (see below!). The terrain is moderate to steep ridge country.

Day 1: Arrival in Ede
Day 2: Ede - Beekbergen
Day 3: Beekbergen - Ellecom

Arrival in Ede

Day 2:    Ede - Beekbergen
48 km

You will cycle towards Otterlo through forests, sand drifts at the Mosselse Zand and heathland. In Otterlo you will also find the entrance to fenced Hoge Veluwe National Park. Inside this area of outstanding natural beauty is the Kröller-Müller Museum for art. Its collection includes works by Vincent van Gogh and a lovely sculpture garden. Also worth a visit is St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge. An entrance ticket to the park and museum is included in the tour price. At the end of the day, you’ll reach woody Beekbergen and your hotel.

Day 3:    Beekbergen - Ellecom
48 km

Today’s first stop is Voorst located very attractively in the valley of the River IJssel and at the edge of Veluwe Forest. On the way, you will see the silhouette of the beautiful historical town of Zutphen across the water. The varied scenery will delight you: water meadows of the River IJssel, countryside and woodland. The lovely village of Ellecom is where you’ll stay the night.

Day 4:    Ellecom - Ede

In beautiful National Park Veluwezoom, pedal your way through pinewood and heath land. Then climb up the Posbank and enjoy the breathtaking views. The route continues to Arnhem, a favourite city for shopping. You could relax in Sonsbeek Park or go to modern and fabulous Burgers Zoo. Alternatively, visit one of the city’s museums such the Open Air Museum showing how ordinary Dutch folk lived over the last few hundred years; or the Airborne Museum where you’ll learn all about the Battle of Arnhem (1944). At the end of the day, follow the River Rhine to the Wageningsche Berg (Arboretum) and then North to your hotel in Ede.

...I liked the road Beekbergen - Zutphen - Ellecom the view was varied and the road good. I would have stayed one extra day in Zutphen to look at this old town better. I would have seen bike odometer and speedmeter on the bike. It was difficult to estemate distance on the way...

...The program of cycle rides was very good. All baggage was picked up and delivered with no trouble, bikes were good as were the hotels.  Superbly organised!...

...The bicycle tour was wonderful and the weather was perfect.  The bike, attached lock and repair kit (unused?) were very comfortable and in great shape. The hotels Avegoor and de Rheehorst were excellent, Princess was ok.  My bags were always there before I arrived.  The route was a great sampling of different countrysides and terrains, cities, villages and forests.  Day 3 was my very favorite.  And thank you for the book of sites to visit....

....My daughter and I have completed our bike tour and returned the bikes and helmets to the bike shed at the Reehorst Hotel in Ede. All in all, the bike tour was a wonderful experience....

....Hotel de Reehorst ideally located near to station in Ede.Arrived  @10.30 am so left baggage & walked into Ede. Excellent Hotel apart from arty decor!....

...Thanks for the email and thank you for organising our tour. We had great weather and enjoyed the varied scenery, towns and villages along the way. The hotels were all very good and comfortable. We managed the distances and the bikes were excellent. We found everyone really friendly and helpful along the way. The luggage transfer was very efficient. We got lost a couple of times because we missed a sign post or two.  We found the numbers easy to follow on day one but ran into a problem at the end of day two coming into Ellecom so had a problem finding the hotel but resolved that. I think the LF paths were not as easy to follow as the numbered way markers. On day three we found the next way marker was not always signposted from the previous one so had to refer to the map to find intermediate numbered way points. We couldn't get the C shaped bike lock(from the saddle bag) to work - one was jammed and one didn't have a key. The only other issue we had was the tax on the hotel bill - two hotels wanted to charge us - We had to pay 5 euros at Princess Hotel in Beekbergen - they would not accept our argument that we had paid you - the hotel in Ellecom also asked for it but accepted that we had paid you in advance...
