Rivers and Veluwe Tour Extra
7 days,
€ 800

Introduction

This holiday brings you the best of two worlds: Wide-open, bright and sparkling river landscapes, as well as the more enclosed, earthy landscapes of the Veluwe region marked by farmland, woodland, fields of heather and drifting sands. Come in August to fully appreciate the beauty of flowering heather fields. We will send you criss-cross through the Veluwe, a Natura 2000 area. The region boasts two National Parks; a top-class modern-art museum in the middle of a forest; wonderful natural scenery and pastoral countryside; and Airborne Museum “Hartenstein” dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem in 1944.

We also offer this trip as a 5-day trip without the round tours.

Day to Day

Day 1   Arrival in Apeldoorn (Ugchelen)

You start your cycling holiday in the comfortable Van der Valk Hotel in Apeldoorn, the Cantharel, beautifully situated in the green. You will immediately feel at home in this luxury hotel on the Veluwe. The Cantharel has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, and wellness facilities.

If you travel to the starting location by train, we recommend starting in Lent because of the location of the hotel opposite the Nijmegen-Lent train station.

If you want to use your rental bike on the day of arrival for a tour of Apeldoorn (or a tour of Nijmegen-Lent or Arnhem if you start the trip there), please mention this in the booking form.

Day 2   Apeldoorn (Ugchelen) - Nijmegen (Lent) 64 km

You cycle through the forest and heathlands to the hamlet of Hoog Buurlo and Hoenderloo. Then through the green treasure trove of the Netherlands, National Park De Hoge Veluwe. Do you immediately grab the pearls of the Jachthuis Sint Hubertus or the Kröller-Müller Museum? In the Kröller-Müller you will even find the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world! The enormous sculpture garden is also impressive. Entrance ticket for the park is included (not the museum). Relaxed you cycle further in the varied nature to Schaarsbergen, past Hotel Warnsborn and the impressive Airborne cemetery in Oosterbeek. Then you come via cycle paths past Kasteel Doorwerth. Take the time for a short walk around the castle and enjoy a delicious chocolate cake at the thick acacia from 1678 in the inner courtyard. Via the Fonteinallee you are quickly at the bicycle ferry of Driel. You cross the Rhine where the Poles tried in vain to reach the other side in 1944 in the battle for the bridge in Arnhem. You cycle via the atmospheric Elst (nice stopover if there is time left) to the beautiful Van der Valk Hotel Nijmegen-Lent. If you are short of time, you can shorten the route in 3 places. The shortest variant is 48 km.

Day 3   Round trip from Nijmegen-Lent

You can choose from 2 wonderful tours of 48 km (which can also be combined into one tour of 57 km), which also takes you through the centre of Nijmegen. The south-western tour goes through the Land van Maas en Waal, straight through the nature park Overasselt En Hatertsevennen with the fever tree of St. Walrick and back through the forests below Nijmegen.

The south-eastern route is a beautiful but hilly ride through the Rijk van Nijmegen along the Mookerheide, the South Limburg-like Zevendal. A beautiful bend through Germany takes you to Groesbeek, where the famous Zevenheuvelenweg to Berg en Dal awaits you. Finally, a fast descent takes you right past the Netherlands' thickest tree (a short walk) and the Ooijpolder. Impressive views of the moraine accompany you the last bit back to Nijmegen.

Day 4   Nijmegen (Lent) - Arnhem (Papendal) 61 km

Your bike tour starts with a beautiful winding route through the Ooijpolder. You will see a diverse landscape with beautiful river courses, sand pits, marshes, shifting dunes and floodplains. You will also notice several old brick factories, which have since closed. After the village of Ooij you will come across the nice coffee spot De Thornsche Molen. The terrace offers a beautiful view of the old mill. Via Germany you cycle to Millingen aan de Rijn. There you cross the Rhine by ferry and go along the lake De Bijland to Herwen. Pause for a moment at Huis Aerdt, a beautiful historic building surrounded by canals and pollard willows. You then cycle through the Rijnstrangen area over old dikes at Aerdt and Pannerden to Loo. There you take the ferry to Huissen and cycle along the Rhine to the John Frost Bridge, known from Operation Market Garden in September 1944. Despite the allied offensive, the capture of this bridge failed. Thousands of victims were the result. Via Arnhem-centrum you cycle to Oosterbeek. A visit to the Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein' is interesting. There you will discover everything about the Battle of Arnhem. On the Veluwe you will then reach Van Der Valkhotel Arnhem-Papendal. From Nijmegen a 10 km shorter route along the Waal, Doornenburg Castle with the "Thousand-year-old Oak" and the ferry at Pannerden is also possible.

Day 5   Round trip Arnhem (Papendal) 59 km

Today you will make a tour around the geographical heart of the Netherlands at the Lunterse Goudsberg, where you cycle between forest, heath, drifting sands and old agricultural lands. The tea house of Mossel is a popular place for a cup of coffee. This centuries-old agricultural enclave is located in the middle of the nature reserve De Planken Wambuis, which is rich in large game and bird species, including the Raaf, which is now rare in the Netherlands. Just past the drifting sand area Wekeromse Zand you will find so-called Celtic Fields, agricultural lands from the Iron Age, with a reconstructed farm. On hot days you can cool off in the Bosbad or in the conifer garden De Dennenhorst. From the lookout tower De Koepel you have a beautiful wide view. For lunch, a pancake at Landhuis Kernhem and a walk to the neighboring maze are recommended.

You cycle across the vast heathlands of the Ginkelse Heide to the Quadenoord estate, where a walk along the (African) sculpture garden is definitely worth it. Through a beautiful stream valley you continue to Renkum. This village suffered greatly from the war violence in WWII and was then rebuilt in the so-called Delft School style.

You can also take a shorter tour of 44 km, skipping the Quadenoord estate and the Renkumse stream valley, but leaving more time for a game of Pitch & Putt in the Papendal sports centre.

Day 6   Arnhem (Papendal) - Apeldoorn (Ugchelen) 62 km

Today is a day 100% Veluwe. With the Veluwezoom National Park on the way. You cycle over the Warnsborn estate, where the rare juniper grows. Then you go past the Dutch Open Air Museum and Roosendael Castle to Schaapskooi Heuven. During the day, the Rheden sheep herd grazes on the heath, at night they stay in the cage. Together with heather sods and/or straw, the manure is used for fields of poor sandy soils. Soon after, you reach the hilly Posbank. Here you can take a lovely walk through the heath, which blooms beautifully purple in August and September. At the top at Paviljoen de Posbank you can have a tasty and healthy lunch in the middle of nature. Then you cycle through the beautiful nature of the Veluwezoom National Park to Laag-Soeren, Eerbeek and along the Apeldoorns Kanaal to Loenen. On the way to Beekbergen you will come across the small and large Loenense Waterfall. Then you cycle further through the forests of Ugchelen and reach Van der Valk Hotel Apeldoorn - De Cantharel. You can also choose a 14 km shorter and purely green route: after the Elsberg you cycle directly to Loenen. You then skip Eerbeek and the climb to the Posbank.

Day 7   Return Home

After a wonderful night in a good bed, you will enjoy a fantastic breakfast buffet in the comfortable Van der Valk Hotel Apeldoorn de Cantharel. Then your cycling holiday ends.
