Start just south of the Veluwe in the Netherlands’ oldest town and set off through an enchanting river landscape, past castles and country estates. We will send you criss-cross through the Veluwe, a Natura 2000 area, marked by farmland, woodland, heathland and drifting sands. Come in August-September to fully appreciate the beauty of flowering heather fields.
We also offer this trip as a 7-day holiday, with extra roundtours.
Day 1 | Arrival in Apeldoorn (Ugchelen)
You start your cycle tour in the comfortable Van der Valk Hotel in Apeldoorn de Cantharel, beautifully situated in the countryside. You will immediately feel at home in this luxury hotel on the Veluwe. De Cantharel has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and wellness facilities. If you are travelling to the starting point by public transport, we recommend starting in Nijmegen-Lent due to its better location (close to the train station).

Day 2 | Apeldoorn (Ugchelen - Nijmegen (Lent) 64 km
You cycle through forest and moorland to hamlet Hoog Buurlo and Hoenderloo. Then through the Netherlands' green treasure trove, National Park De Hoge Veluwe. Do you immediately take in the pearls of Jachthuis Sint Hubertus or the Kröller-Müller Museum? The Kröller-Müller even houses the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world! The enormous sculpture garden is also impressive. Entrance ticket for the park is included (not the museum). Relaxed, you continue cycling through the varied countryside to Schaarsbergen, past Hotel Warnsborn and the impressive Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek. You will then pass Doorwerth Castle via cycle paths. Take your time for a short walk around the castle and enjoy a delicious chocolate cake by the thick acacia from 1678 in the courtyard. Over the Fonteinallee, you will soon reach the Driel cycle ferry. You cross the Rhine where the Poles tried in vain to reach the other side in 1944 in the battle for the Arnhem bridge. You cycle via the attractive town of Elst (nice stopover at time over) to the beautiful Van der Valk Hotel Nijmegen-Lent. If you run out of time, you can shorten the route in 3 places. The shortest variant is 48 km. |
||
Day 3 | Nijmegen (Lent) - Arnhem (Papendal) 61 km
Your cycle route starts with a meandering route through the Ooijpolder. You will see a diverse landscape with beautiful river courses, quarry ponds, marshes, shifting sand dunes and floodplains. You will also notice the many old stone factories that are now closed. After the village of Ooij, you will pass the De Thornsche Molen café. This café offers a magnificent view of the old mills. Via Germany you cycle to Millingen on the Rhine. Cross the Rhine by ferry and cycle along the lake De Bijland to Herwen. Make a stop at Huis Aerdt, a beautiful historic building surrounded by canals and meadows. After the Rhine estuary, you cycle over old dykes near Aerdt and Pannerden to Loo. There you take the ferry to Huissen and cycle along the Rhine to the John Frost Bridge, famous for Operation Market Garden in September 1944. Despite the Allied offensive, the conquest of this bridge failed. Thousands of victims were the result. You cycle to Oosterbeek via the centre of Arnhem. A visit to the ‘Hartenstein’ Airborne Museum is well worthwhile. Here you will discover everything about the Battle of Arnhem. On the Veluwe, you will then reach the Van Der Valkhotel Arnhem-Papendal. From Nijmegen there is also a 13-kilometre shortcut along the Waal, Doornenburg Castle with the ‘thousand-year-old oak’ and a ferry boat at Pannerden.

Day 4 | Arnhem (Papendal) - Apeldoorn (Ugchelen) 62 km
Today is a day with 100% Veluwe and en route Veluwezoom National Park. You cycle via Warnsborn Estate, where the rare genever berry can be found. You then cycle past the Dutch open-air museum and Roosendael Castle to the Heuven sheepfold. During the day, the flocks of sheep from Rheden graze on the heaths and at night they stay in the barn. Together with heather and/or straw, the sheep dung is used to make arable land from dry sandy soil. You soon reach the hilly Posbank. Here you can enjoy a wonderful walk through the heather, which blooms a vibrant purple colour in August and September. At the top, at the Posbank pavilion, you can enjoy a delicious lunch in the middle of nature. You then cycle through the beautiful nature of the Veluwezoom National Park to Laag-Soeren, Eerbeek and along the canal from Apeldoorn to Loenen. On the way to Beekbergen you will come across the small and large waterfalls of Loenen. Then you cycle on through the forests of Ugchelen and arrive at Van der Valk Hotel Apeldoorn - De Cantharel. You can also take a 9 km shortcut and choose a completely green route: after Elsberg you cycle directly to Loenen.
