Vincent van Gogh's masterpieces are to be found throughout the world. But their roots are firmly planted in the Dutch province of Brabant. This is where he was born and raised. Many of his letters were written in Nuenen and a quarter of all his works date from the period he spent in Nuenen. This includes his first masterpiece "The Potato Eaters". Brabant is where his love of the peasant landscape, the countryside and simple way of life began.
Arrival Nuenen
Today you have the time to take it easy and enjoy the Van Gogh highlights in and around Nuenen. You might want to start with a visit to the Vincentre to learn about this great artist. Afterwards you cycle around the 21 highlights that can be found in this area.
Today is your first full cycling day exploring the rural landscape of Brabant province that inspired the painter when he was in his very early thirties. This route has been signposted with special Van Gogh cycle route signs. At the end of the day you will reach charming 's Hertogenbosch, capital of Brabant province. Here you can find the North Brabant Museum, the leading museum for the best of Brabant art and history. The museum is the only location in Brabant where actual paintings by Van Gogh can be viewed. You will see the peasant women from The Potato Eaters here, his father’s parsonage and the unspoilt Brabant landscape for which Van Gogh was always homesick.
Leaving 's Hertogenbosch southbound via Vught, you will cycle to Loonse and Drunense Duinen National Park (inland dunes) then continue to the towns of Oisterwijk and Tilburg. When he was 13-14 years old, Van Gogh attended secondary school in Tilburg. On the spot where his school once stood, children are now learning to draw in Vincent's Art Room where history and the newest technology merge together. In the reconstructed classroom, they can see how he received his first serious drawing lesson from renowned master Constant Huijsmans. (only for groups, reservation needed)
Enjoy the peace and quiet on this cycle tour as we take a loop into the province. Between Alphen and Goirle we almost cross the Belgium border. Cycling the backroads of Brabant you will see the landscape of Van Gogh paintings come to life.
On the last day you cycle on small well signed cyclepaths back to Nuenen. You will once more pass through the fields and farmlands that he loved so much. Before entering Nuenen you will cross Eindhoven, the largest city in Brabant and home to Philips, DAF Trucks and Brabantia. Once back in Nuenen you can visit your favorite "Van Gogh" spot.
After breakfast in your hotel, you will return home.
