Mills and Meadows Tour

Bike Tour: Mills and Meadows Tour - 6 days

Enjoy the peace and quiet on this cycle tour. This is pure Holland for you. Black and white Frisian cows graze in lush green meadows bordered by pollard willows. Under vast horizons, water birds land on dazzling lakes with with reedy fringes. The world famous windmills at Kinderdijk scoop excess water out of the polder up into the river. Numerous interesting historical towns await you.
Day 1: Arrival in Utrecht
Day 2: Utrecht - Gouda
Day 3: Gouda - Papendrecht
Day 4: Papendrecht - Gorinchem
Day 5: Gorinchem - Utrecht
Day 6: Return Home

Day 1:    Arrival in Utrecht

Arrival in Utrecht.

Day 2:    Utrecht - Gouda
62 km

Today you’ll see stately homes, castles, woods and parks before reaching "cheese town” Gouda. Try to plan your trip so that you will be able to see the traditional Thursday morning cheese market at the start of Day 3. The town is also known for its syrup waffles (try one hot!) and candles.

Day 3:    Gouda - Papendrecht
37 km

From Gouda you'll cycle via the "Green heart of Holland" to the village of Kinderdijk, explore the site where 19 windmills have been standing majestically in rows since 1740. They were used to drain excess water out of the low-lying polder up into the River Lek. One of the mills is open to the public. Your destination, Papendrecht, is just a ferry crossing away from of one of Holland’s oldest towns; Dordrecht. Dordrecht is completely surrounded by rivers. Beautiful bridges take you across the water into the heart of town. Around the harbour you will see many monumental buildings.

Day 4:    Papendrecht - Gorinchem
60 km

Today you cycle through a part of Biesbosch National Park, one of the few remaining freshwater tidal areas in Europe. The countless islands of marshy willow woods, reed-lands and grasslands are surrounded by creeks and rivers. The place is a resting, foraging and breeding site for water birds. Nature lovers should visit Biesbosch Centre Dordrecht for information on this fascinating area. Before you arrive in Gorinchem you can, if you wish, take a boat trip to visit the interesting Loevesteijn castle. The town of Woudrichem is definitely worth a visit.

Day 5:    Gorinchem - Utrecht
58 km

Gorinchems walled town centre has a long, turbulent history and over two hundred monuments to remember it by. It used to be big in fishery, markets and trade, but was often plagued by floods and conquerors (the town was the gateway to Holland). In the heart of the city of Utrecht lies the peaceful Oude Gracht (= Old Canal). Its characteristic wharves are unique to Utrecht. Nowadays they are the pleasant setting for waterside cafes and restaurants. Explore the Museum Quarter and do some (window) shopping on one of the quieter shopping streets.

...The trip met and even exceeded our expectations. The bikes were comfortable and the equipment excellent. The countryside was beautiful and the people friendly. We hope to have another bike trip in The Netherlands using your company again...

...This is the third time we have used your company & once again we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Gouda is a beautiful town & the hotel perfect. We had fabulous food on our trip & met with very friendly Dutch people...

...I hope you're doing well. I enjoyed the trip very much to lovely Holland! The accomodations were fine. The Postillion in Bunnick, Gouda Best Western and Casa 400 were excellent and Hotel Gorichem was adequate. The food at all 4 hotels was excellent. The bike and maps were good but some of the route signs did not match exactly with the maps. I would go again if I had the opportunity and recommend it to friends....

...I had a wonderful time. My top 3 suggestions would be to: 1.) have a hotel closer to city centre at Dordecht (the current one is too far away from the city centre for restaurants for dinner after a long day of riding); 2.) have a lighter bike; 3.) provide a water bottle (may run out of water out in the countryside in the middle of the ride at the end of a long day!). The top 2 things I appreciated with the tour were that: 1.) the maps and directions were clear to follow (I had the GPS, but on starting a trip, it was always easier to look at the map and junction numbers as the GPS was always confused at the very beginning); 2.) great plan of the sights and cities to see, especially day 2 with Utrecht, and day 3 with Gouda and Kinderdijk.

....I had a wonderful holiday with Dutch Bike Tours for the mills and meadows tour. The routes and the scenery were great and I really thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was very impressed with the organisation, everything was in place. The hotels standard was superb and very relaxing after a long day cycling. The hotel staff was helpful in all towns and aware of the the Dutch bike tours arrangements. The luggage was following us smoothly.
Many thanks for your great work, I appreciate my late booking but everything went smooth. I hope you will keep these good standards and improve on it.
Looking forward to be in contact again with some sunny weather next summer....
