Cycling from Muiderberg

Bike Tour: Cycling from Muiderberg - 5 days

For the duration of this cycling holiday you will reside at Het Rechthuis Hotel in the village of Muiderberg. Find peace and tranquillity in this lovely area nestled in between Het Gooi nature reserve and the Vecht Region boasting lakes and the meandering River Vecht. Within cycling distance you will discover the star-shaped fortifications of the town of Naarden, as well as Muiden Castle and Naarden Lake. Surrounded by two areas of woodland, the village has a countryside-feel to it although in actual fact it is quite central, near to Amsterdam and Almere. It is in an ideal location for cyclists to make several interesting day trips.

During your stay, you can choose from 4 different bicycle routes. It’s up to you to decide where you want to go.

Day 1: Arrival Muiderberg
Day 2: Oostvaardersplassen / Marken
Day 3: Loosdrechtse Plassen
Day 4: 't Gooi
Day 5: Return home

Day 1:    Arrival Muiderberg

Free parking at the hotel (no reservation required). If you plan to arrive by public transport, you should be aware that the town of Muiderberg doesn’t have a train station.  There’s a bus service for the last 30 minutes of your journey.

Day 2:    Oostvaardersplassen / Marken
74 km

Oostvaardersplassen wetland is nature at its purest, a rare thing in this country. It developed all by itself when it was left alone by man after Flevo Polder was reclaimed from the sea in 1968. Although, it is relatively young for a reserve, it is undoubtedly unique, precious and beautiful. With a surface area of 6000 hectares it is the largest wetland in the country. The rough grasslands are grazed by hundreds of Konik ponies, roe deer and Heck cattle.

Marken (74 km)
Follow the IJsselmeer past Muiden castle and the beautiful dyke villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam to the former Zuiderzee island of Marken. Marken is known for its green wooden houses and traditional costumes. The way back leads through Waterland, a sparsely populated area with many ditches interspersed with meadows. Enjoy the tranquility and views. If the distance to Marken is too far, you can shorten the route at various places, for example in the summermonths by using the ferry at the isolated village of Holysloot.

Day 3:    Loosdrechtse Plassen
55 km

The landscape between the cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht is wet, typically Dutch, and dotted with picturesque villages. Experience the wide-open countryside and wonderful lake vistas. The emptiness of the space around you - sometimes reaching to the horizon – and the huge skies above, give one a joyous feeling of freedom.  Along the banks of meandering River Vecht you will reach the village of Weesp, a place you won’t want to miss.

Day 4:    't Gooi
62 km

Set off for Naarden, one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe. Proceed to the polder: Arkemheen-Eemland. You’ll be amazed by the extreme openness of this unique landscape characterized by peat meadows. Further on, heather fields at the wood’s edge make for a kind of bocage landscape that is quite captivating.  How wonderful to be able to cycle back to your hotel in these natural surroundings.

...The Hotel het Rechthuis was very conveniently located to both the bus stop and the bike routes. The Hotel was very comfortable, clean and the breakfasts were excellent. A nice variety of food (hot and cold) to choose from. We ate dinner at the hotel once and it was very good too. The bikes were in good shape, appropriate size for us and equipped with a pannier and handle bar bag each so lots of room to bring what we needed each day. There is a lovely beach, grocery store, other restaurants and a park all with in walking distance to the hotel...

...Naarden is very interesting, worthwhile to stop there a few hours. Hotel was just about ok, quite basic and with room for improvement. The food however was excellent and the location perfect...

... Please pass on my thanks to all at Dutch Bike Tours for all the help in arranging such a great holiday. The hotel was first rate. Location great. Bikes superb. Routes were fantastic including the self operated chain ferry on day three. Will probably be contacting you again to organise another short break...
