Arrival in Utrecht.
Idyllic scenery all around as you cycle to Amsterdam on the banks of the lovely River Vecht. Characteristic for this area are the many stately homes and summerhouses built by rich Amsterdam merchants in the 17th and 18th Centuries. At the end of the day, Amsterdam awaits! Everyone has their own reasons for loving this remarkable city. What will yours be?
Today is the day you cross the Green Heart. This term is used to describe the rural area surrounded by the big cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. On the way, you will come across low-lying peat meadows with grazing cattle; vast polders under beautiful skies; lakes, streams and rivers; and pretty villages with monumental farmhouses. Your destination is "cheese town Gouda, also known for its candles and syrup waffles (try one hot!). If possible, plan your trip so that you can go to the traditional Thursday morning cheese market.
Would the 80 km be to long for you then you can split this day by booking an extra overnight in Woerden. (49 km and 43 km)
From Gouda you'll cycle via the "Green heart of Holland" to the village of Kinderdijk, explore the site where 19 windmills have been standing majestically in rows since 1740. They were used to drain excess water out of the low-lying polder up into the River Lek. One of the mills is open to the public. Your destination, Papendrecht, is just a ferry crossing away from of one of Holland’s oldest towns; Dordrecht. Dordrecht is completely surrounded by rivers. Beautiful bridges take you across the water into the heart of town. Around the harbour you will see many monumental buildings.
Today you cycle through a part of Biesbosch National Park, one of the few remaining freshwater tidal areas in Europe. The countless islands of marshy willow woods, reed-lands and grasslands are surrounded by creeks and rivers. The place is a resting, foraging and breeding site for water birds. Nature lovers should visit Biesbosch Centre Dordrecht for information on this fascinating area. Before you arrive in Gorinchem you can, if you wish, take a boat trip to visit the interesting Loevesteijn castle. The town of Woudrichem is definitely worth a visit.
Gorinchems walled town centre has a long, turbulent history and over two hundred monuments to remember it by. It used to be big in fishery, markets and trade, but was often plagued by floods and conquerors (the town was the gateway to Holland). In the heart of the city of Utrecht lies the peaceful Oude Gracht (= Old Canal). Its characteristic wharves are unique to Utrecht. Nowadays they are the pleasant setting for waterside cafes and restaurants. You might like to explore the Museum Quarter or do some (window) shopping on some of the quieter shopping streets.
After breakfast in your hotel you will return home.

...Overall a lovely holiday. We will definitely do another trip. I wanted to see more canals and old towns - and we achieved that, but on balance I preferred the beautiful forests near Arnhem which we did last year...
...This is our third Dutch Biketours holiday, and was as great an experience as the previous two. A well thoughtout trip, great routes, good hotels and excellent organisation. The baggage transfer was seamless. This will not be our last trip to the Netherlands, and we will be using Dutch Biketours again! Excellent!...
... Luggage pick up and organisation is great. Communication is very good. The rides are beautiful. We had a great time. Everything was well arranged from the bikes, hotels, routes. It was simply amazing...
...Thank you for your email. We are delighted to say that we had a wonderful cycle holiday. (this was our second cycle tour holiday with Dutch Bike tours.) We found all the hotels of good standard and welcoming and in each hotel they were expecting us to arrive. Each hotel had somewhere we could securely store our bike overnight. Baggage transportation was very efficient and arrived trouble free...
....We had a lovely time cycling around Holland, we really enjoyed getting up in the morning and having a plan already made for the day. GPS was great. We did get lost a couple of times though! Dutch people were very friendly and helpful....
....Everything worked fine. The organisation, the hotels, the bikes were excellent. Every member of our group is fully satisfied. GPS worked also fine....
...We are now back at Bunnik, and have very much enjoyed the bikes, the country, the hotels and the weather during the last week. Thank you...
