This is a four-day holiday based at a cyclist-friendly hotel in Amsterdam. You will stay three nights in Amsterdam and have two full days at your disposal for cycling. We have devised four routes for you to choose from, so you can decide for yourself where you would like to go: the fishing village of Volendam and cheese town Edam; the world-famous windmills at Zaanse Schans; Muiderslot Castle; or the elegant city of Haarlem. When planning your journey to Amsterdam, do try to arrive early and depart late in the day so you can make the most of days 1 and 4 and possibly go for a spin then too. This could also be the ideal holiday for those groups with conflicting priorities, like when the gentlemen prefer a long cycling trip whereas the ladies have their hearts set on Van Gogh. Meet up again in the evening over a bowl of stamppot to discuss your day.
If you arrive early, you can explore the different neighbourhoods of Amsterdam by public transport or on foot. There are fun shopping streets, museums, squares to while away your time, restaurants… enough to fill your day.
Choose one of our four routes. For example the route to Marken, Volendam and Edam on the coast of what used to be Zuiderzee sea. The former two are old fishing villages; the latter shipped out salty, round, polder cheeses to the rest of the world. This route takes you through picture-postcard scenery.
Or choose a shorter loop and cycle to the elegant city of Haarlem and back in 45 kilometers.
Choose another of our four routes. The route to Muiden Castle is 63 km long. We have a bit of a military theme going here. The town of Naarden is a good example of a star-shaped fortification (have a peek on google maps!). It’s very well preserved, complete with walls and a moat. Next up is the village of Muiden, at the mouth of the River Vecht. Although very picturesque in itself, it is best known for its small moated castle built around 1280 - well worth a visit!
The last of our four routes takes you to Zaandam and back. The area around the River Zaan was very early to industrialize thanks to wind power. Hundreds of sawmills, for example, contributed in a big way to the building of the enormous shipping fleet that brought Amsterdam prosperity. This is a fantastic route for those interested in industrial heritage! In addition to quaint old factories and warehouses lining the river, look forward to the beautiful windmills at Zaanse Schans that continue to produce mustard, paint and oil to this day. Check out the many home movies on youtube for a foretaste of Zaanse Schans. As the sun sets, back in Amsterdam, you could go for a leisurely stroll through the romantic canal district.
After breakfast, it’s time to pack your bags. There are big lockers at the train station where you can leave your luggage to continue your explorations for another couple of hours, perhaps.

...A really lovely short trip exploring the beautiful countryside around Amsterdam...
...We really enjoyed our biking holiday thank you. I will definitely come again. The bikes were super. We cycled on the first day to Zaanse Schans and on the second day we did the round trip to Volendam via Marken which was lovely. The hotel was fine and we slept well. We had some great meals out in Amsterdam and then finished off with sightseeing for a couple of days before flying home...
...the weather was not in our favour. We tried biking on the second day but got absolutely soaked and the arctic wind chilled us to the bone, even with lots of layers on and raincoats!. However, the bikes were fantastic, and the cycle lanes we did go on were well sign posted and would have made for a great two days. We would love to come back and have another try ! The information package you gave us was really informative.Communication with your company was great, given that we were unsure of what we were booking, and being so far away from Europe....
... I really enjoyed my time in and around Amsterdam - the hotel was easy to get to, it was very bike-friendly, it was easy to get into town, and the room was nice. I loved the cycling - like your guide says, it couldn't be easier. Really easy to amend the recommended routes as I pleased just with the map and the numbered junction system (although I half-regretted extending my trip to Haarlem out to the dunes at Zandvoort, and then back by a rather circuitous route around the various runways of Schiphol - that airport is bigger than you think! I did an unscheduled 100km that day!). Next day I went up to Volendam via Marken, which was a fantastic ride through extraordinary landscapes. Loved it. Great city, great country, excellent cycling; it's always a pleasure visiting the Netherlands, and the whole experience is transformed the moment you get on a bike. I'll definitely be back for more...
...I had a great bike tour. Your company provided all the necessary info, good, sturdy bikes, great itineraries, and the flexibility to use the bike all 4 days.
The GPS was very helpful but on my trip to haarlem it sent me in the wrong direction several times and that was frustrating as it sent me all the way back the way I had come through the park at first. And I noticed that when I turned it off mid way though the tour during a lunch break when it came back on it would revert to the original number of kms instead of adjusting for what I had already done. Just something you maybe could look at to help the next person. Great trip, thanks again!...
...We have enjoyed our experience. Amsterdam is a beautiful city and so is the rest of the country, we believe. Also, Dutch people seems to be cool, too....
....We had a great time. Really enjoyed the suggested tours around Amsterdam, and the bikes were great....
