Bike Tour: Holland Highlights Tour - 6 days

Remember Hans Brinker, the Dutch boy who placed a miraculous finger on a hole in the dike to save his country? Can you envision a picture postcard of majestic windmills under a great blue sky? Do you feel a nostalgic longing for all things typically Dutch? The wooden clogs, canals, bicycles, pancakes, tulip fields, polders and traditional costume? It will all come alive before your very eyes on this specially-designed tour! Your trip starts and ends in Amsterdam, allowing ample opportunity to explore the city, monuments and museums. And we’ve kept the cycling distances short, to give you more time at top tourist attractions such as Zaanse Schans and Volendam.

Route
Day 1: Arrival in Amsterdam
Day 2: Amsterdam - Haarlem
Day 3: Haarlem - Zaandam
Day 4: Zaandam – Volendam
Day 5: Volendam - Amsterdam
Day 6: Return Home

Day 1:    Arrival in Amsterdam

Try to arrange for an early arrival! You’ll want an entire day just to wander the 17th-century canal district, gazing up at the beautiful old townhouses and taking in the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 2:    Amsterdam - Haarlem
29 km

Get an  early start and beat the queues at the Van Gogh or Anne Frank museum. At the end of the morning, say "tot ziens!” to amazing Amsterdam and mount your bike to journey through Kennemerland where a great variety of lovely countryside awaits: vast polders, wild(life) gardens, country estates, woods and beautiful peatland. You will stay the night in the elegant city of Haarlem.

The attractive city centre offers a wealth of possibilities for shopping, delving into art and culture, or relaxing in cafes and restaurants. In April and early May, you have the option of cycling a longer route of ca. 60 km where you can see the tulip fields &nbsp.

Day 3:    Haarlem - Zaandam
37 km

Start the day in historic Haarlem and get a glimpse of Golden Age painting at the Frans Hals Museum. Or try the exquisite Teylers Museum, the Netherlands’ oldest, open since 1784! At midday, jump back on your bike and ride the banks of the River Spaarne to pretty Spaarndam and the IJdijk. Tiny ancient houses perch atop the dike, high and dry, while others sit safe and snug behind it. Reputedly the oldest lock in the world, Kolksluis is still in working order, standing at its breath-taking location. Pause to honour dear little Hans Brinker, the brave boy who -according to legend- stuck his finger in a hole the dike thus avoiding a great flood and certain doom.

Pedalling onward along the River Zaan you come upon adorable green wooden houses, with white lace curtains in the windows. Several prime windmills stand in gorgeous rows at picture-perfect Zaanse Schans. Stop to take pictures, visit the wooden shoe workshops and find out how to make Dutch cheese. Then take a break and nibble on a well-deserved pancake.

Day 4:    Zaandam – Volendam
31 km

A few cranks of the shaft cover the short stretch to Het Twiske recreational park, a favourite spot for summer get-aways. On hot days, city dwellers flee Amsterdam and cycle out to the lake for a dip. Next, a varied landscape of woods, meadows and lakes accompanies you to Monnickendam and today’s cycling route concludes in the festive fishing port of Volendam. Browse decorating boutiques, shop for great finds and relax at an outdoor cafe overlooking the water.

Day 5:    Volendam - Amsterdam
35 km

Volendam’s red brick houses and quaint old quarter lead to an intriguing museum depicting the history, culture and folklore of this close-knit community. The permanent exhibit includes inspiring period rooms, traditional costumes and jewellery and a section on eel fishery, complete with model boats. Delight in the art collection with its mind-boggling cigar band mosaics. Circling back to the city via the isle of Marken, you’ll be in Amsterdam in time for a bit more sight-seeing.

Day 6:    Return Home

Your cycling holiday draws to a close this morning after breakfast and it is time to go home.

Quickrelease

All our bikes come with a quick release system, which makes it very easy to adjust the height of the saddle and the handle bars.

Repairkit

There is one small puncture kit and pump included, which can be found in the pannier. In case a rental bike has another problem, we always advise you to go to a bike repair shop or call the bike breakdown emergency number which is provided in the travel documents when you book this extra service.

A enjoyable introduction to the Netherlands, which proved to be stimulating and suitable for all the family.

29-07-2023

It was a magnificent sensory experience,we heard the whistle of the reeds, the cry of the geese, the water hen,the sights that enthralled were the cows grazing without hedges, the waterfowl ,the barges moving up the river ,the heron standing stock still fishing, the unexpected jetties at some of the house with the ornamental ducks about to dive into the dyke. The smell of the beautiful flowers ,the countryside in general, slurry tóo.. Finally the taste of the local beer texels at the.end of a day in the saddle. Bliss.

15-07-2023

A very well organised trip- everything went smoothly and I am happy to recommend the services of DBT.

09-06-2023

Excellent route, easy cycling though differing scenery: major cities, water meadows and coast. Good hotels all with secure bike storage. Lots of wildlife, great for birding.

20-05-2023

Thank you Dutch Bike Tours once again another fantastic well organized cycling tour.

11-04-2023

We were a party of three women traveling and could not have asked for a better tour! The instructions and signs were easy to follow. Had an excellent time enjoying the beautiful countryside and the accommodations were perfect!

13-08-2022

Lovely trip . We had two 12 year olds with us who are generally hard to persuade to be involved in physical activity . They absolutely loved their holiday . We have had a few trips in the UK , sometimes even on bike exclusive routes/ tracks but those short trips cannot really match what you can do on the marvellous Dutch cycling network .

23-09-2019

...As first time bike tourers we were a little apprehensive initially but gained in confidence as the week went on We did not use GPS which may have assisted us on a couple of occasions. Every hotel very good and well appointed...

23-07-2019

...Had a great holiday travelling around near Amsterdam. The weather was changeable but we managed to avoid most of the showers. Although we had a problem one day with a bike, Dutch Bike tours helped us contact the bike insurance quickly and they turned up and fixed it so we could continue onwards. All communication with Dutch Bike tours was great, they were very efficient and helpful, with excellent English. I did find my bike seat a bit sore though, but I bought a seat pad which really helped!! We would certainly book with them again, as the luggage transfer was efficient and the routes were really quiet and well planned. Thankyou for a great holiday...

29-05-2019

...The location of the hotels were fantastic!...

29-08-2018

...There wasn’t anything about this trip that we didn’t enjoy. The routes were varied and interesting and the accommodation and breakfasts were all very good. We have never been to Holland before and this trip and opportunity to see the variety of places in just 4 days surpassed our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We can’t recommend it enough. Thank you...

12-08-2018

...We really enjoyed Haarlem, and also the journey between Zaandam and Volendam - “the best playground in the world” according to my children!...

26-05-2018

...It was a great holiday with lots of laughs...

05-08-2017

...The bikes were great - better than our bikes at home. We had a great time. We were lucky with the weather. We will recommend the tour to our friends...

27-06-2017

...thank you very much! We are very grateful to you. We have enjoyed much of the route. see you soon!...

02-06-2017

24-04-2017

...Excellent pack provided at first hotel with easy to understand routes
A great bike trip which delivered all expectations. Extremely well organised...

15-04-2017

...A great bike trip which delivered all expectations. Directions were very clear to understand, extremely well organised...

10-04-2017

...Good organisation and well planned holiday...

08-09-2015

Thank you very much. Everything was very good. The bikes and the hotels. We had lots of fun!!!

07-09-2015

...We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the tour. If only you could have provided better weather!  Actually it wasn't too bad - we managed to avoid biking in the rain most of the time.
I think if there was any room for improvement it was on our night in Zaander. The hotel was lovely but we felt like there was really nothing to see or do in the immediate area.  We went to bed early and did our sightseeing in Zaanse Shans early the next morning. I suppose there isn't much to do anywhere in the area at night. Your company's service was excellent and I will certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to bicycle in the Netherlands...

11-08-2015

....We'd love to do it again, but with better maps and details, (and a LOT more sunshine!) and maybe a little less ambitious of a tour. I'd rather cycle no more than 30-40km between and have more time to wander around and and explore the sights along the way.  We didn't feel like we had time to explore Gouda at all, for example. And along the route between Utrecht and Bunnik there are many side paths that looked inviting, but we didn't feel we had time to deviate from the path....

10-08-2015

04-08-2015

...Thank you for your help. We had a wonderful tour!...

26-07-2015

...We had a great time on our tour! We were very happy with the quality of our hotels and the bikes. We saw many beautiful things along the way too. There were times when the GPS instructions were not very clear or were confused by detours so I am happy that we had several types of directions as reference. Overall, my cousin and I had an amazing trip and would be happy to recommend Dutch Bike Tours to our friends. I can't wait to return to the Netherlands again someday!...

23-07-2015

...We enjoyed our Dutch Bike Tours holiday very much.  In almost all regards, it exceeded our expectations.  The hotels were excellent, the transfer of the luggage was flawless, and, most importantly, the routes were good and our cycling experience was outstanding. All made for a memorable vacation for us....

15-07-2015

....Thank you for the idea of a cycling holiday. We used your Holland Highlights tour and then working with you, we adapted the route to suit our own interests. We timed everything around the Wednesday Cheese Market in Edam! Everything worked well and we had a great time. The ‘Holland Highlights’ tour is aimed at people who want to do short distances. This was great. I do not have a bike and at 60years was worried how I would cope....

21-06-2015

...We very much enjoyed The Art Hotel, very helpful and enthusiastic receptions staff, and great breakfast. Bikes fine. Directions worked well except when getting out of Amsterdam on day 1....

01-06-2015

...We enjoyed our cycle tour very much, and were extremely impressed with the administrative detail, the transport of our luggage and how smoothly the trip went!  The hotels were all comfortable and we had some lovely food.  We were especially impressed with the Westcord Art hotel in Amsterdam, which was a very welcome haven, with everything we could want at the end of our trip as the last day was very windy and cold!...

27-05-2015

We were very pleased with our holiday. The bikes were good as was the accommodation.

15-04-2015

...Our ebike tour was a great success.  We are certainly considering another similar booking with you...

21-08-2014

...We had an absolutely fabulous time. Thank you so much. The organisation was without fault. The bikes all in excellent condition. The tour was great and all the directions perfect. Our accommodation was exceptional standard. The breakfast was great and the level of service and friendliness was overwhelming. We were delighted and I have since recommended you to many of our friends. We are very keen to come again, maybe next year. Can you please send me your brochure when you have it for 2015 please. See you again...

08-08-2014

...Thank you for a wonderful Holiday, one of the best we have ever had. We were pleased with the quality of the bikes. They were just right for the type of riding we were doing. The hotels were all well chosen, clean and very comfortable. They all provided plentiful tasty breakfasts to set us up for a days riding on your brilliant Dutch cycle routes. (England has a lot to learn!) Our only criticism is that you really need to improve the directions for getting out of the cities. We had problems finding the route out of both Amsterdam and Haarlem.  More precise directions, including more road names in the cities would have been a great help. Apart from that we enjoyed the routes that you had chosen and hope to book another holiday with you again next year...

14-07-2014

...The hotels were lovely, the food was excellent, and everybody we met was very kind and friendly. As this was the first time we had done this, however, we would maybe have liked to have our hands held a bit more. The Casa 400 receptionists didn’t seem to know much, and had to be reminded that we would have a pack waiting for us. Fortunately they found it. We had thought that someone would issue us with bikes. It seemed very casual to just go and take them, but fortunately the reception also found the keys and we found bikes with our names on. Perhaps the procedure could be explained a bit more. Amsterdam was quite hard to navigate when we were not used to the signs, and we did get lost once or twice.  I am not sure what you could do about this though! We would also have welcomed a bit more description of what we were passing through, or what we could see if we decided to take different routes. As we are slower cyclists we cycled to our destination first, and then did the sight seeing once we had arrived. Many people might feel more comfortable doing it this way. It was a very enjoyable experience, the weather was mostly lovely, the scenery interesting and as I said, the people were very kind and helpful. When we got lost (signs disappearing) in the outskirts of Haarlem, two elderly people on mobility scooters insisted on showing us the way, and giving us a guided tour of the town at the same time. We had to pedal quite fast to keep up with them.  That was so kind! I hope we shall be back for another holiday, and know what we are doing this time before we get there....

11-07-2014

... I was (and am) very impressed by your company. From the moment that I first asked questions about options about trips, to actually making a reservation, I was impressed by your quick replies. I am happy for you to use feedback. I loved the trip and found the whole experience absolutely fabulous. My only suggestion would be to stay in Edam, not Volendam. We spent an hour in Edam on the morning before we left before returning to Volendam and then taking the ferry to Marken and the dyke to the mainland. I would happily recommend your company for your email service alone. The notes etc were all fine and we soon learnt to adapt as we went along. And finally, Holland is so flat after years of cycling on the Scottish west coast islands - that we really could not go wrong...

23-06-2014

...The directions were clear, the hotels and meals both very nice. It is amazing the the Netherlands has such a wonderful network of bike trails. Since we arrived in Amsterdam a day early, and had two extra days there at the end of the tour, we decided to skip the rather detailed wanderings through the city on the recommended route on the first day. Instead we charted our own course to Sloterdijk from the Westcort Art Hotel, an easy ride, and picked up the route to Haarlem there. You might consider offering this as an alternative to riders who want to skip the city riding. Haarlem was great, not crowded and easy to get around in. We especially liked the windmill tour. On the way home from Volendam, we followed your directions to Centraal Station, and then navigated back to the Hotel via map, which seemed easier than following the route you detailed. The bikes were good, we had only one half day of rain, and we count this as a great vacation and a terrific way to see Holland and meet the Dutch people...

29-05-2014

...Thanks for checking in, the tour was fantastic.  Everything was well organized and coordinated.  I hope we are able to do it again sometime soon!...

22-05-2014

....We had a great time on our tour. Really enjoyed the diversity of this part of Holland.
Had a few challenges with the signage. In the country we missed a few signposts that may have been hidden by weeds or hedges. In the city the signage was generally good.
Found the hotels very good and nicely located near major attractions. The staff at the hotels were great and our luggage arrived most days before we did. All hotels were aware of my wife's need to eat gluten free and looked after her very well.
Only suggestion that we have is that it might be better for both riders to have the knooppoint instructions. The other thought we had is to maybe push the gps a little stronger. We would likely use it the next time (assuming that feedback is positive about their use). Notice I said next time. :). My wife would like to do another tour in two years time. Time will tell.
Thank you again for looking after this very pleasant part of our vacation. We will indeed refer our friends to your company. By the way the bikes and panniers were excellent....

17-04-2014

...My son and I just finished our Holland Highlights bike tour and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Your bike culture is simply amazing. This will make you laugh but we must have taken at least ten photos of the underground bike parking lots. I want to send those photos to our city council and suggest we should try this approach in Canada.
At any rate, we appreciated the top quality bikes, great bag transport and nice hotels. I would not hesitate to recommend your company to all my friends. Thank you!...

19-06-2013

....Thank you for e-mailing me. I was planning to e-mail you to let you know my feelings about our experience. Overall, our group of 7 found the experience of bicycling through the Netherlands to be absolutely wonderful. I feel the major part of the success of our vacation was due to your organization.
The bicycles provided were in very good condition and made the riding a pleasure. The GPS was a wonderful help. Amir was very helpful and professional in setting me up with the GPS.
The hotels chosen were wonderful, especially in Edam.  This was our favorite town and hotel of the trip. We were very happy that we stayed in Edam rather than Volendam. We have already recommended your organization to a number of friends and acquaintances that were interested in our trip. We also hope to someday (? Next year) do another bicycle tour through the Netherlands.
Thank you again for making our trip such a wonderful experience....
